Zac sat behind a bookself in the library, not noticing anything going on around him. There wasn't much of anything going on. The few people left in the library were using the computers at the front. Zac was situated as far away as he could from everyone else- at the very back of the huge room. Nobody would know that he was there unless they had seen him walk in. He was hidden away behind the shelves, content.
In his hands was a plain blue notebook. It was filled with Zac's neat, almost perfect handwriting. It was the notebook that he wrote music and lyrics in. Most of his songs were dark, almost sad. Through his music, he could get out the pain and frustration he felt about school, home, and the world.
Sometimes he used the notebook as a journal. He only wrote about his day when something strange or new happened to him. If he wrote every day, it would seem dull and repetitive. Parents want me to be like my brother. Beaten up today after school. Sat alone at lunch. Today however, he had something new to write about. Something almost bizarre had happened at lunch. Not one, but two girls sat with him. Zac hadn't expected it. Taryn and Lucy were their names. They were both pretty, and Zac knew for a fact that Lucy Black was a popular girl. Why she had just noticed him, he didn't know. He hadn't been surprised that she had never seen him before. Zac went out of his way to keep to himself. He had never seen Taryn though- she was new to Bellview.
Two girls sat with me at lunch today. Taryn and Lucy. They were both really nice. It was just completely unexpected. I don't think that they realized how much sitting with me could hurt their reputations. It was nice, though. I could get used to having people around. They won't stick around, of course. Nobody does. But I can dream.
Zac stopped, his pen still pressed against the paper. He didn't know what else to say. What was there to say? He could write about how much he hoped they'd befriend him. But he knew in his heart that they'd forget about him easily. Zac wasn't the kind of person to stick in someone's memory. He didn't make much of an impression. That was just his nature, to be quiet and reserved. He wasn't happy with the way he was, but he could live the rest of his life being lonely and never complain.
Zac set the open notebook on the ground, leaning his head back against the bookshelf. He closed his eyes.
"Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No more greed or hunger
A brotherhood of men
Imagine all the people
Sharing for the world
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
Take my hand and join us
And the world will live as one..."
Zac was in his own little world, his eyes closed and his arms folded across his chest. He doubted that anyone could hear him from where he was sitting. His soft, sweet voice was quiet enough.
